It is with deep regret and sadness that we hear of the passing of Karlheinz Stockhausen aged 79.
Stockhausen attended Messiaen's classes in Paris and was deeply influenced in particular with Messiaen's serial ideas in Mode de valeurs et d'intensites. Messiaen described him along with Boulez as bright young genius's. Stockhausen went on to change the face of contemporary music leading the way in electronic and spatial music right up until his death. 2008 would not only have celebrated Messiaen's centenary but also Stockhausen's 80th birthday. Our thoughts go out to his family and close circle of friends.
Saint François d´Assise in New York
Recently appointed director of New York City Opera Gérard Mortier confirmed his plans to produce Messiaen's Saint-François d'Assise in the 2009-10 season at the Seventh Regiment Armory on Park Avenue, where it will be staged amid an installation by Russian artist Ilya Kabakov. see article

UCE Birmingham Conservatoire, the University of Sheffield and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama are pleased to announce an international conference to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Olivier Messiaen and provide an opportunity for scholars interested in his music to share their knowledge and deepen their understanding of all aspects Messiaen, his music and his influence. The conference will be held at
Birmingham Conservatoire, in the heart of Birmingham, on 21-24 June 2008.*

Claude Samuel is now confirmed as a keynote speaker for the Messiaen 2008 conference. This will provide delegates at the conference with an opportunity to hear the recollections, observations and thoughts of a man who, in addition to publishing the famous books of interviews, worked closely with the composer in a variety of guises, from record and radio producer to festival director, and who is now co-ordinating the French celebrations of Messiaen's centenary.

In the French Alps, in the heart of the Dauphiné, rises the Matheysin. Plateau Situated between Grenoble and Gap at an altitude of 900M this region is composed of lakes and mountains. Many birds familiar to Olivier Messiaen populate the landscape with its quietude. Messiaen bought his first house here in 1936. This modest residence at the edge of the lake Laffrey was Messiaen summer refuge and an important composing environment. Thus Messiaen wanted to protect this setting that inspired so many compositions. The surrounding paths and byways were trodden by the composer while notating the songs of blackbirds, larks, warblers and so on.
This is the unexplored dimension of Olivier Messiaen, his favourite places that the festival "Messiaen in Matheysine" wishes to discover for enthusiasts of his music. See all details

Duquesne University announces Celebration Messiaen.
Bringing together the composer’s former students and foremost interpreters for concerts, master classes and scholarly presentations. The event takes place Nov. 30–Dec. 3, 2008, at Duquesne University’s Mary Pappert School of Music, a center for study of organ of and sacred music, as well as works of French composers. Fantaisie (1933) pour violon et piano

Composed in Paris in 1933 and hitherto unpublished, this work is dedicated to the violinist Claire Delbos.
Messiaen's output for the violin is very slight, limited as it is to two extremely well-known pieces: the Théme et variations of 1932 and the 'Louange a l'immortalité de Jésus' from the Quatour pour la fin du temps. So violinists will be especially glad to discover his Fantasie, a work for violin and piano.
It is dedicated to 'Mi', as the composer affectionately referred to Claire Delbos his first wife, whom he had already dedicated a cycle of melodies with piano or orchestral accompaniment called Poemes pour Mi.
The Fantasie is a continuous composition of 161 bars with three distinct themes, though the different sections also comply with the standard structure of exposition, development and recapitulation.
The first theme, stated by the piano alone, has considerable rhythmic variety and anticipates the 'gigantic' music of the Danse de la fureur of the Quatour. The second theme is based on a triplet motif followed by four repeated notes and a trill.
The third theme is a melody (marked molto appassionata) sustained by a variegated piano accompaniment.
Fantasie for violin and piano has a duration of 15 minutes.

This 18-CD set offers a comprehensive overview of Messiaen’s work in recordings made between 1963 and 2000 by the Warner labels Erato and Teldec. The performers include the composer himself, his wife the pianist Yvonne Loriod, Pierre Boulez, Marie-Claire Alain and other champions of Messiaen’s work.
As a tantalising and unique bonus, a full CD is devoted to an extensive interview with Messiaen recorded in 1988 in which he speaks, in French, about bird-song, colour, travel, religious faith, opera and the avant-garde. The richly illustrated 149-page booklet includes a full English translation of the interview as well as the composer’s detailed commentary about most of the works included in the set – with booklet editor Fabian Watkinson supplying information about the remaining works.

The abstract painter Mark Rowan-Hull's exhibition Seeing Music, Hearing Colour has taken its impetus from the music of Olivier Messiaen, and is inspired by themes such as transubstantiation and synaesthesia – the joining of senses. The Royal Festival Hall commissioned Mark Rowan-Hull to collaborate as part of its series of Messiaen organ recitals to mark the tenth anniversary of the composer's death. This culminated in a performance at the Royal Festival Hall on 19 February 2002 and a feature on BBC Radio 3. Building on the excitement his work has created and the interest generated by the performance at the Royal Festival Hall, Mark Rowan-Hull extended this project in the exhibition Seeing Music, Hearing Colour. This exhibition took place at St James's Church, Piccadilly between 2-16 April 2002. The church was chosen as the ideal setting to convey Messiaen's religious beliefs, and links specifically with the Royal Academy exhibition Paris: Capital Of The Arts which ran until April 12. Olivier Messiaen, born in 1908, was also a central figure in the modern movement in Paris. |

2008 South Bank Messiaen Festival. From the Canyons to the Stars
A major Messiaen festival will take place throughout 2008 (see below) when Southbank Centre will present a year of music in celebration of the centenary of his birth. Under the artistic direction of the pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, key interpreters of Messiaen’s music will converge on the site and across London, performing Messiaen’s music as well as that of his inspirations, pupils and associates. Aimard himself will be strongly featured as a soloist, and the year will begin and end with a visit from the Ensemble Intercontemporain (EIC) from Paris with Aimard as soloist. They will open the festival with the huge and colourful Des canyons aux étoiles under their new Music Director Susanna Malkki and, to round off the year in December, the EIC will give two concerts under the baton of Pierre Boulez: on 10 December, Messiaen’s actual centenary date and the second on 11 December, marking the 100th Birthday of Messiaen’s contemporary Elliott Carter. The festival also showcases further collaboration with Resident Orchestras, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta. Another key partner will be the Royal Academy of Music.
A feature of this festival will be an ongoing series of Messiaen’s organ works, performed around London in the city’s cathedrals and churches. In partnership with Southbank Centre will be St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral and the London Oratory.
