!Messiaen world premiere!
conert des garrigues - Fauvettes de L'Hérault
(work reconstructed by Roger Muraro)

On the occasion of the worldwide creation of the work to be held at Toppan Hall in Tokyo, Japan, on June 23, 2017, discover the genesis of this new score presented by Roger Muraro ...
Did there remain manuscripts to be discovered in the heritage of Olivier Messiaen?
The investigation carried out in the archives of the composer deposited at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France revealed a major surprise.

At the turn of the 1960s, Olivier Messiaen left unfinished the composition of a great concerto that he could have titled Les Oiseaux de l'Hérault. The work, for piano, several soloists and orchestra, was to respond to an official order for the centenary of Claude Debussy, in 1962.

The trip to Japan by Olivier Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod in the summer of 1962 disrupted the development of this concerto. The fascination that Messiaen had for this country inspires him indeed Sept Haïkaï for piano solo and small ensemble. Undoubtedly pressed by the deadlines, he resumed and adapted some of the themes of the concerto, to Sept Haïkaï. It is by mixing songs of birds of Japan and some of southern France that the composer would pay tribute to Debussy.

If the first works found in the concerto propose a too brief orchestration, the score of the piano solo, on the other hand, is magnificent, brilliant and among the most daring of this period. Based on birds' notes taken in 1958 in the Hérault, the work reveals new songs, including the improvisations of a stunning polyglot Hypolaïs and warblers who compete with virtuosity. This astounding score is to be presented.

Taking again the indications of structure left by the author, Fauvettes de l'Hérault - garrigue concert is the title I chose to give to the piece for piano alone, among those evoked by Messiaen in the manuscripts of the concerto.
I thank the Fondation Olivier Messiaen and the BnF for their unfailing support of my work. (Roger Muraro)

Tokyo naturally imposed itself for the world premiere. Roger Muraro will play Fauvettes de l'Hérault - concert of the garrigues for piano solo, at Toppan Hall, June 23, 2017, underlining in fact the close links between this new work and Sept Haïkaï.
Other performances in Europe and South America are already planned.
The French premiere will take place in Paris during the festival Présences in February 2018.

Agenda confirmé des premières nationales : 11 novembre 2017 - LUGANO (Suisse), 3 décembre 2017 - LIÈGE (Belgique), Février 2018 - PARIS (Festival Présences, France), Novembre 2018 - SAO PAULO (Brésil)

The MESSIAEN FOUNDATION, under the aegis of the Fondation de France, instructed AIDA (Agence Iséroise de Diffusion Artistique) to develop the artistic project of the Maison Messiaen, the composer's summer retreat in Petichet, France where he worked and listened to the birds singing, in the heart of a sensitive natural area in Matheysine.

The Olivier Messiaen Foundation was formed to preserve and cherish the work of Olivier Messiaen, one of the major composers of contemporary music in France in the twentieth century.
The Olivier Messiaen Foundation was created in 1995 under the aegis of the Fondation de France by his widow Yvonne Loriod Messiaen 3 years after the death of her husband.
The foundation will enable the creation of a museum, concerts, master classes etc. at Petitchet in the Isère region of France and also contribute to the conservation of manuscripts, works annotations and belongings. Much of these documents have already been entrusted to the National Library of France (BNF). The Foundation also supports young composers and pianists, as well as researchers or authors dedicated to the work of Olivier Messiaen.

The Olivier Messiaen Foundation, under the aegis of the Fondation de France, told the BNF all manuscripts, archives, scores, records, books, photographs and objects collected by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) and his wife Yvonne Loriod Messiaen (1924-2010), be held at the BNF forthwith.

Messiaen himself had already given some documents in the 50's and others had been filed by Yvonne Loriod Messiaen after 1992.
Nearly two hundred fifty linear meters of documents (manuscripts of his works, letters, books, photographs, sound recordings, programs) have now joined the departments of
Music and Audiovisual in the National Library of France.
The material will be gradually made available to researchers, musicians, music lovers worldwide.

***Messiaen world premiere at the BBC Proms 2015
thanks to Birmingham Conservatoire academic***

Christopher Dingle, Professor of Music at Birmingham Conservatoire, has devoted much of his professional career to studying Messiaen.
The new piece Un oiseau des arbres de Vie will most likely be the last mature orchestral work to emerge from the catalogue of one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. The composition was previously intended for Messiaen’s final completed orchestral work Éclairs sur l’Au-Delà… (1987-91) and contained his familiar signature ‘Bien’ indicating the movement was complete.
The movement lasts about four minutes and the material comes from Messiaen’s transcription of the song of the Tui, a New Zealand bird. A keen ornithologist, all of Messiaen’s music from the 1950s onwards includes birdsong, while much of his music expresses his Catholic faith.

Christopher Dingle’s research on the piece was supported by the French Music Research Hub at Birmingham Conservatoire, part of Birmingham City University, and he drew on over 20 years’ study of Messiaen’s oeuvre to fully realise the three-stave score.
He said: “From everything we know of Messiaen, it is almost certain that he would have used this movement in another work had he lived longer – it is too good a piece to discard. I am hugely excited about hearing the piece, and this is likely to be the last premiere of a complete mature orchestral movement by Messiaen.

“Birdsong was a fascination of his throughout his life, but he became more rigorous and scientific in his approach from the 1950s onwards. He filled many manuscript books with birdsong notations, and much of it was done in the field, but he also used recordings, working the birdsong into his compositions.
“His use of birdsong is much more sophisticated than any other composer in terms of the species he represented, the interpretation of song, and the notation. He regarded birds as God’s musicians, almost like angels.”

Un oiseau des arbres de Vie is a challenging piece. The orchestra is very large, the woodwind section including seven flutes and eight clarinets, while there is also plenty of tuned and unpitched percussion, and multiple changes of tempo.
Dingle added: “It’s fast and furious, with the song flying around the instruments and continually punctuated by a punchy gesture for the whole orchestra. I think it will be breath-taking for the audience and leave the conductor and orchestra breathless!”

The world premiere of Olivier Messiaen’s Un oiseau des arbres de Vie took place on 7 August at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms.
It was performed by the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Nicholas Collon.

Robert Scholl
Recitals of the Complete Organ Works of Olivier Messiaen (1908-92) will took place in Arundel Catheadral during 2016 and 2017.

Messiaen’s organ works represent a major cornerstone of his output. Messiaen was an organist who sought to express his Catholic Faith, the source of his inspiration, through his music. This series of recitals at Arundel Cathedral by Robert Sholl presented Messiaen’s complete organ works both in concert and as devotional works. The works were therefore performed (with readings), around the religious festivals which inspired them.

Olivier Messiaen, one of the most important musical creators of the twentieth century, died on April 27, 1992. From 1931 to his death, he was the holder of the Cavaillé-Coll organ of the Trinity Church in Paris, instrument which was for him a real laboratory of new ideas, inspired by the timbres, the acoustics, the atmosphere of this place. Even today, this exceptional instrument remains a faithful witness to the art of Messiaen and continues to stimulate exploration and creation. As part of the concert season "Grand Organ Trinité Messiaen", the organist and composer Thomas Lacôte, current holder along with L. Mallié and J. Fr. Hatton, pays tribute to his predecessor on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his death..
At the centre of the program, is Messe de la Pentecôte (1951), a masterpiece of 20th century music, composed specifically from the sounds of the organ of the Trinity and "summary of all improvisations combined "As the composer himself asserts. Even though his improvisations of this period were never recorded, Thomas Lacôte's research in the personal archives of Olivier Messiaen kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France will make it possible to trace them at this concert. He will improvise from written preparatory notes to improvisation, recorded by Messiaen in the form of a list of "registrations". These unpublished sonic ideas, to resume life, must pass through the prism of the organ of the Trinity, halfway between reconstitution and reinvention, research and creation.
The Apparition de l'Eglise Eternelle of the young Messiaen, a work by his master Tournemire and an excerpt from the Etudes pour organ by Thomas Lacôte will complete this program.

Jennifer Bate enjoys a unique reputation as a world authority on the French composer, Olivier Messiaen, and was his organist of choice. Unicorn-Kanchana recorded the complete organ works between 1979 and 1981, appearing subsequently on CD. Each volume was heard by Messiaen prior to its final editing; he endorsed every one with enormous enthusiasm. All won international acclaim. Her world première recording of his last masterpiece for organ, 'Livre du Saint Sacrement', had exceptional international success, winning a Grand Prix du Disque. Treasure Island are to be commended on the reissue of these classic recordings on the occasion of her 70th birthday, and are re-releasing all of Jennifer’s Unicorn and Unicorn-Kanchana recordings.Treasure Island Music CD - 6 discs, Scheduled for release on 29 September 2014.

JOHN MORTON (1930 - 2014)
It is with much sadness that we report the passing of John Morton on the 10th of October 2014.

John was the foremost exponent and virtuoso of the Ondes Martenot in the UK. Taught by Jeanne Loriod,
he himself taught Cynthia Millar and gave guidance to many others.

John’s professional performances on the Ondes Martenot include a production of Honegger’s Joan of Arc at the Stake with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1970, starring Mia Farrow and Michael Gambon, at the Royal Albert Hall, several performances of Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphonie with the likes of Norman Del Mar, Michel Beroff, Andrew Davis and Jan Latham Koenig and Trois Petite Liturgies de la Presence Divine with Robert Sherlaw Johnson and Nicholas Cleobury.
He has also performed the ‘Trois Turangalila’ movements under the direction of Pierre Boulez as part of a BBC Prom concert.
His work in TV, film and radio included ‘Flambards’ (David Fanshawe) and several advertising ‘jingles’, appearing on the BBC children's show Blue Peter and work with the American film composer Elmer Bernstein, with whom he exchanged Christmas cards.

As well as a fine musician, John worked extensively in theatre throughout his life as a set designer, director and actor, having appeared in a number of repertory companies throughout the UK.
Throughout the 1960s and 70s, John worked as a freelance director for Opera North, and took charge of musicals for various amateur and semi-professional companies in the north-east of England. He also played a large part in reviving the fortunes of the Darlington Civic theatre, and was a driving force behind the restoration of the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond, North Yorkshire.

It is with much sadness that we report the death of Almut Rößler.
She died on 13th February aged 82.
Roessler graduated from the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland Music School (now a division of Robert Schumann University of Dusseldorf) and at the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold. Her teachers have included Michael Schneider at the organ, Hans Richter Haaser at the piano, William Painter in composition and Kurt Thomas in conducting. Further studies followed in Paris with Gaston Litaize.
In 1967 she was the successor of Gerhard Schwarz at the St. John's Church in Dusseldorf, where she worked as a cantor and organist until 1997 and founded "Johanneskantorei". She assumed a teaching position in 1959 at the National School of Church Music and in 1977, was appointmented professor at the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule in Dusseldorf.
Rössler has given concerts throughout Germany, most European countries, the USA, Japan, Korea and Canada performing in the Berlin Philharmonie, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Osaka Symphony Hall in Japan as well as in La Trinité (Paris). She did much to passionately promote the organ music of Messiaen and her recordings are landmarks. Rössler premiered many new works by composers such as André Jolivet, Johann Nepomuk David, Jürg Baur, Kei Kondo, Ernst Ludwig Leitner, Diether de la Motte, Dimitri Terzakis, Gislher Klebe (Concerto for Organ and Orchestra) and Ivana Loudová. Many of these organ works are dedicated to her.
According to her writings, it was thanks to her that Messiaen decided to compose his huge organ work “Méditations sur le Mystère de la Sainte Trinité”. He gave the world premiere in the US but she gave the European premiere in Düsseldorf, in 1972; and, in 1973, the premiere on Messiaen’s organ at the Trinité, Paris. Later, in 1986, she gave the world premiere of " Livre du Saint Sacrement” in Detroit US, in front of a huge public of organists, and, in 1987, she gave the Paris premiere in the house of Radio-France at the organ of La Trinité.

Prisme: ‘Olivier Messiaen et les années `30’ Anton Doornhein, Hans van Gelder and Arjan Versluis Cavaille-Coll-organ - Ste Trinite - Paris 2 CD plus booklet featuring the organ works of Claire Delbos.
Hans van Gelder and Erik Versluis have produced a major new release focusing on Messiaen and his contempories in the '30s. Three organists (Arjan Versluis, Anton Doornhein and van Gelder himself) perform music by Daniel-Lesur, Jolivet, Langlais, Migot, Dupré, Tournemire, Messiaen and Delbos on this double-CD recorded in Ste Trinité in Paris.
There is also a sumptuous booklet in three languages with interesting articles and stunning photographs about Messiaen and Claire Delbos, his first wife. The booklet also contains articles about Jeune France, Cécile Sauvage, the Eucharist and more. The recording quality is outstanding, capturing every nuance of the Trinité organ with crystaline clarity. Few releases in the past years have come close to the quality of this production and is an absolute must for all French organ enthusiasts and Messiaen aficionados.

Two releases from the excellent Prestare label headed by Jolanda Zwoferink.
Henco de Berg presents an all French recital of Vierne, Dupré and Messiaen (Extracts from La Nativite and Livre du Saint sacrement) concluding with seven improvisations on Veni Creator Spititus while Jolanda herself continues her journey though Messiaen's organ works withDiptyque, Offrande au Saint Sacrement, Monodie, Apparition de l'église eternelle and Messe de la Pentecote.
Both artists perform on the grand organ of St Martin, Dudelange, Luxembourg which although lacking in some fine kaleidoscopic colouristic detail of Cavaillé-Coll instruments is more than worthy of all these works.
These are impeccably recorded accounts as one has come to expect now from Prestare with attractive and informative booklets and notes. Highly recommended.

Messiaen’s Livre du Saint Sacrement on iTunes

See and read full transcript (in French)of the anniversary Mass held in Avignon on 10th December 2008 with the homely read by P. JEAN-RODOLPHE KARS. The mass was celebrated by the Archbishop of Avignon, Mgr Jean-Pierre Cattenoz, in the church St Didier, where Messiaen was baptised, 15 days after his birth, on Christmas 1908. During the whole evening, Olivier Latry was at the organ. After the mass, two poems of Messiaen’s mother, Cécile Sauvage, were read, with improvisations at the organ. And finally, “La Nativité du Seigneur”, concluded this memorable celebration.

Paul Festa’s award-winning and critically acclaimed first film Apparition of the Eternal Church captures a spectacular confrontation between thirty-one mostly nonreligious artists and the music of French Catholic composer Olivier Messiaen. Faced with the challenge of putting Messiaen’s apocalyptic music into words, listeners including literary critic Harold Bloom, filmmaker John Cameron Mitchell, actor and Pulitzer-nominated playwright Eisa Davis, Tony-nominated drag star Justin Bond (“Kiki & Herb”), Scissor Sisters singer Ana Matronic and the late harpsichord virtuoso Albert Fuller tell a story that ranges from scenes of torture and hellfire to sex and spiritual ecstasy.
OH MY GOD: Messiaen in the Ear of the Unbeliever is based on Paul Festa's award-winning and critically acclaimed film Apparition of the Eternal Church.
The book and movie capture the explosive responses of 31 mostly nonreligious artists to the apocalyptic music of the Christian visionary Olivier Messiaen.

MESSIAEN MAGNIFIED - Banquet pour O by C. Scott Tresham

Banquet pour O is one of the most unique tributes to the work of pre-eminent French composer Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992)

Banquet pour O is based on Messiaen’s own recording of Le Banquet céleste for organ, his first published composition. “I’ve carefully catalogued every duration of every note in that recording” says Tresham, “it’s not simply a case of saying all the quarter notes last this long, all the eighth notes are x number of seconds... many notes that look like they’re the same duration on the page are in fact completely different in Messiaen’s performance.” Each duration is then multiplied so that the entire performance (originally just over seven minutes long) will last 100 minutes. “I’m sure it will take [the audience] a while to adjust to this new level of slow, but once you do you enter a real contemplative state. There’s a whole universe to explore in each one of these sonorities. The experience can actually be euphoric.” Read more

Messiaen's La Nativite du Seigneur with Jennifer Bate
This recording of Jennifer Bate, one of the foremost international organists of our day, playing Oliver Messaien’s La Nativité du Seigneur was made in the magnificent setting of Norwich Cathedral, when a capacity audience gave her virtuoso performance a prolonged ovation.
Messiaen’s religious works for the organ have been compared with those of Beethoven in their greatness for the solo instrument. La Nativité du Seigneur is no exception: its virtuosity embraces a magnificent cycle of nine meditations on the Christmas message.
Bate’s recordings of Messaien’s complete organ works have won international acclaim and many prestigious awards.

Messiaen's breathtakingly intense opera on the life of St Francis of Assisi stars Rod Gilfry as the charismatic visionary, beguiled by the glory of creation, yet fearful of both its imperfections and its transience. Pierre Audi's thoroughly engaging production for The Netherlands Opera brings out the naive imagery, the grandeur, and above all the vast tenderness of the resplendent score, revealed as a grandiose ritual with the meaning and purpose of life as its central theme. But the real drama of the work takes place in the orchestra. Elevated to stupendous heights by the sublimely inspired Ingo Metzmacher, The Hague Philharmonic and the Chorus of De Nederlandse Opera combine
forces with a brilliant cast to produce the finest possible musical pilgrimage. forces with a brilliant cast to produce the

Organ works (2 DVD)
Willem Tanke (Marcussen Organ of the Saint Laurens Church, Rotterdam)

2008 was the centenary of Messiaen’s birth, and this 2 DVD set of a selection of his organ music is a superb introduction for those new to his music and an essential purchase for all organ aficionados. Messiaen wrote in many genres, chamber, orchestral, piano solo, and enriched greatly the organ repertoire of the 20th century. Although Debussy and Ravel influenced his earliest works, (orientalism and famously the songs of birds were life long influences and a source of fascination to him) Messiaen became a significant influence upon avant-garde composers such as Boulez and Stockhausen. You can sample Tanke’s approach to Messiaen, which is influenced by his study of Buddhist faith and philosophy, on YouTube (keywords: Tanke and Messiaen). The technology afforded by DVD allows the listener to view from several angles, including underneath the bench to see Messiaen’s ferociously mobile pedal parts at first feet, as it were. ( Brilliant Classics )

Tanke plays the Marcussen organ in St Laurens Church, Rotterdam

‘This new set by Willem Tanke is most certainly Messiaenic heaven to me, and has placed the music far closer to my heart than any of the previous sets. This recent release is as close to perfect as I think I will find’ The Organ
Tanke is a specialist in the organ works of Reger, JS Bach and Messiaen. He is also famous as an improviser and champion of contemporary Dutch music. He is a professor of theory and improvisation at Rotterdam Conservatoire

The performers include the composer himself, his wife the pianist Yvonne Loriod, Pierre Boulez, Marie-Claire Alain and other champions of Messiaen’s work.
