It is with much sadnees that we report the passing of Harry Halbreich.
Harry Halbreich (born February 9, 1931, Berlin; died June 27, 2016, Uccle) was a Belgian musicologist. He studied with Arthur Honegger and later with Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire. From 1970 to 1976 he was Lecturer (German: Dozent) in Musical Analysis at the Royal Conservatory in Mons. He worked on numerous radio broadcasts and co-founded the Belgian music magazine Crescendo for which he has been major contributor.

He is known for a number of books, articles and studies on modern and contemporary music, including monograph works on Olivier Messiaen, Claude Debussy, Arthur Honegger and Bohuslav Martin?. He has prepared musical catalogues of the works of Honegger and Martin?, and their works are therefore sometimes referred to by their H number. He assisted Nicolas Bacri in orchestrating Honegger's opera, La morte de Sainte Alméenne, originally written in 1918 for voice and piano; the new version was premiered in Utrecht on 26 November 2005, on the 50th anniversary of the composer's death.

Halbreich's interest in modern music has led to articles on composers including contemporary music, particularly Spectral music: Hora?iu R?dulescu, Iancu Dumitrescu, Ana-Maria Avram, Gérard Grisey and Tristan Murail. But he has also written on composers of the past, including Iannis Xenakis, Giacinto Scelsi, György Ligeti, Edgard Varèse, George Enescu, Maurice Ohana, Ludwig van Beethoven and Johann Sebastian Bach.

This page does not propose to be the definitive document on this most important figure in 20th century music, but rather a 'Messiaen umbrella' where those who are interested can access all manner of Messiaen resources and links. It also gives me the opportunity to reflect on a man whose music has continued to touch and influence my musical life. There are many fine accounts and books on Messiaen now which are listed in this site together with my own audio and video resource archive.
This web site posts events, concerts, news, links and articles that are contributed worldwide. If you would like to contribute any Messiaen related articles, musicological studies,

"My faith is the grand drama of my life. I'm a believer, so I sing words of God to those who have no faith. I give bird songs to those who dwell in cities and have never heard them, make rhythms for those who know only military marches or jazz, and paint colours for those who see none". (Olivier Messiaen)

See and read full transcript (in French)of the anniversary Mass held in Avignon on 10th December 2008 with the homely read by P. JEAN-RODOLPHE KARS. The mass was celebrated by the Archbishop of Avignon, Mgr Jean-Pierre Cattenoz, in the church St Didier, where Messiaen was baptised, 15 days after his birth, on Christmas 1908. During the whole evening, Olivier Latry was at the organ. After the mass, two poems of Messiaen’s mother, Cécile Sauvage, were read, with improvisations at the organ. And finally, “La Nativité du Seigneur”, concluded this memorable celebration.
