It is with much sadness that we report the death of Almut Rößler.
She died on 13th February aged 82.
Roessler graduated from the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland Music School (now a division of Robert Schumann University of Dusseldorf) and at the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold. Her teachers have included Michael Schneider at the organ, Hans Richter Haaser at the piano, William Painter in composition and Kurt Thomas in conducting. Further studies followed in Paris with Gaston Litaize.
In 1967 she was the successor of Gerhard Schwarz at the St. John's Church in Dusseldorf, where she worked as a cantor and organist until 1997 and founded "Johanneskantorei". She assumed a teaching position in 1959 at the National School of Church Music and in 1977, was appointmented professor at the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule in Dusseldorf.
Rössler has given concerts throughout Germany, most European countries, the USA, Japan, Korea and Canada performing in the Berlin Philharmonie, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Osaka Symphony Hall in Japan as well as in La Trinité (Paris). She did much to passionately promote the organ music of Messiaen and her recordings are landmarks. Rössler premiered many new works by composers such as André Jolivet, Johann Nepomuk David, Jürg Baur, Kei Kondo, Ernst Ludwig Leitner, Diether de la Motte, Dimitri Terzakis, Gislher Klebe (Concerto for Organ and Orchestra) and Ivana Loudová. Many of these organ works are dedicated to her.
According to her writings, it was thanks to her that Messiaen decided to compose his huge organ work “Méditations sur le Mystère de la Sainte Trinité”. He gave the world premiere in the US but she gave the European premiere in Düsseldorf, in 1972; and, in 1973, the premiere on Messiaen’s organ at the Trinité, Paris. Later, in 1986, she gave the world premiere of " Livre du Saint Sacrement” in Detroit US, in front of a huge public of organists, and, in 1987, she gave the Paris premiere in the house of Radio-France at the organ of La Trinité.

Allan Wicks (born 6 June 1923; died 4 February 2010)
Allan was the first organist in the UK to perform and record the music of Messiaen.

This page does not propose to be the definitive document on this most important figure in 20th century music, but rather a 'Messiaen umbrella' where those who are interested can access all manner of Messiaen resources and links. It also gives me the opportunity to reflect on a man whose music has continued to touch and influence my musical life. There are many fine accounts and books on Messiaen now which are listed in this site together with my own audio and video resource archive.
This web site posts events, concerts, news, links and articles that are contributed worldwide. If you would like to contribute any Messiaen related articles, musicological studies,

"My faith is the grand drama of my life. I'm a believer, so I sing words of God to those who have no faith. I give bird songs to those who dwell in cities and have never heard them, make rhythms for those who know only military marches or jazz, and paint colours for those who see none". (Olivier Messiaen)

See and read full transcript (in French)of the anniversary Mass held in Avignon on 10th December 2008 with the homely read by P. JEAN-RODOLPHE KARS. The mass was celebrated by the Archbishop of Avignon, Mgr Jean-Pierre Cattenoz, in the church St Didier, where Messiaen was baptised, 15 days after his birth, on Christmas 1908. During the whole evening, Olivier Latry was at the organ. After the mass, two poems of Messiaen’s mother, Cécile Sauvage, were read, with improvisations at the organ. And finally, “La Nativité du Seigneur”, concluded this memorable celebration.
