Alicia de Larrocha y de la Calle (23 May 1923 – 25 September 2009)
It is with great sadness that we hear of the passing of pianist Alicia de Larrocha.
She was renowned for definitive performances of the music of her native Spain, in particular
Iberia by Albéniz a work that Messiaen greatly admired and often referred to in his teaching.

This page does not propose to be the definitive document on this most important figure in 20th century music, but rather a 'Messiaen umbrella' where those who are interested can access all manner of Messiaen resources and links. It also gives me the opportunity to reflect on a man whose' music has continued to touch and influence my musical life. There are many fine accounts and books on Messiaen now which are listed in this site together with my own audio and video resource archive. See and read full transcript (in French)of the anniversary Mass held in Avignon on 10th December 2008 with the homely read by P. JEAN-RODOLPHE KARS. The mass was celebrated by the Archbishop of Avignon, Mgr Jean-Pierre Cattenoz, in the church St Didier, where Messiaen was baptised, 15 days after his birth, on Christmas 1908. During the whole evening, Olivier Latry was at the organ. After the mass, two poems of Messiaen’s mother, Cécile Sauvage, were read, with improvisations at the organ. And finally, “La Nativité du Seigneur”, concluded this memorable celebration.
